At Rancho Amalia, we offer Moderate Adventure Tourism experiences, perfect for those who want to connect with nature and enjoy outdoor activities without taking on significant risks. From scenic horseback rides and self-guided hikes to guided walks at sunrise or sunset, each experience is designed to combine enjoyment, exploration, and tranquility in a truly unique natural setting. Horseback riding
We offer the best horseback rides in the Central Valley. Our horseback rides take place on our own property. The tour is guided, and you’ll enjoy beautiful views as well as the peace and freedom of the mountains on our property in the upper part of Naranjo. We have 22 years of experience in the area.
Enjoy the rural experience of horseback riding and appreciate nature from a different perspective. Our horseback rides must be reserved at least one day in advance. We provide certified helmets. We also have an INS Civil Liability Insurance Policy, so only children ages 5 and older are permitted to ride.
Option 1. “Los Duendes” Sector.
Our customers’ favorite. It includes pastures, open landscapes, forests with giant fig trees, and farmland. This is the best option if you’re short on time or it’s your first time riding a horse.
Distance: 2 km.
Rate: ₡12,500 IVAi per person.
Ideal for families with young children or for people with tight schedules.
Option 2. “Dueño de Monte” Sector.
Includes tours through pastures, farmland, two different types of forests, areas undergoing reforestation, rural landscapes in the foreground and middle ground, and background views of the GAM and the Gulf of Nicoya.
Distance: 4 km.
Rate: ₡16,000 IVAi per person.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.
Autoguide Hiking.
Rancho Amalia is located on our farm, which features 7 km of hiking trails through forests, pastures, and farmland.
Access to our farm is completely free for hotel guests, restaurant patrons, and horseback riding participants. Visitors coming solely for a self-guided hike must pay the entrance fee to the property.
In addition, our trails are completely pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for a walk—just follow the guidelines to ensure a pleasant experience.

Adults: ₡3,000 IVAi.
“Ruta de Gigantes” Trail:
This trail is perfect for people who aren’t in great shape or those who come with their families and want to enjoy a pleasant time in the woods.
It can be done entirely on your own and includes 8 interconnected fig trees.
Total distance: 1 km
Difficulty: Easy.
Dueño de Monte Sector:
This route can also be done on foot; we recommend stopping at the meadow to enjoy the peace of the countryside and listen to the birds singing in the forest. The protected mountainous areas and those currently undergoing regeneration inspired the name “Dueño de Monte,” a benevolent spirit that protected nature.
Total distance: 4 km.
Difficulty: Easy. However, some physical fitness is required due to the distance.
“La Llorona” Sector:
This trail is perfect for people who want to start training for hiking. It passes by the Barranca River, where some claim to have heard La Llorona sobbing amid the river’s murmur. You’ll also see cypress-lined landscapes in the distance that look like something out of a fairy tale.
Total distance: 7 km.
Difficulty: Medium-Easy.
Guided Hiking
Guided hikes are available for those who want a unique experience at special times of day. We offer sunrise, sunset, and nighttime hikes. You’ll be able to see animals or enjoy sensory experiences different from those of a daytime hike. Our guided hikes must be reserved at least one day in advance.

Adults: ₡10,000 IVAi.
Distance: 2 km.
Difficulty: Easy.
Birding
Discover a birdwatching paradise at Rancho Amalia. With a prime location nestled among forests and reforestation areas, our ranch is home to an incredible diversity of birds. From vibrant hummingbirds to majestic birds of prey, every sunrise becomes a natural concert.
Walk along our trails and marvel at endemic and migratory species as you immerse yourself in the serenity of the surroundings. A perfect experience for nature lovers and photographers seeking unique moments.

“Memo's Trail” (Scavenger Hunt).
More than 50 years ago, Grandpa Memo roamed our farm and had a thousand adventures. Today, you can follow in his footsteps on this short exploration trail designed for kids and adults who like to do something different.
The Memo Trail is an exploration route featuring clues and challenges to complete the journey. Each participant receives a map and a route sheet. There may be surprises along the way, and upon completion, you’ll receive a small gift.
