ABOUT US

Where the land, family, and nature connect.

Rancho Amalia is the result of years of dedication, family vision, and love for the land. It all began as a small restaurant offering horseback riding, following a classic Costa Rican tradition of naming local eateries “ranchos,” followed by the name of someone special. In this case, the name Amalia was chosen—inspired by the founding family’s daughter, for its meaning, its Swedish origins, and the symbolic value highlighted by a family friend who studied names.

Over time, the project evolved. Although the original restaurant paused operations for a period, the deep bond with the land and the local community remained as strong as ever. With the support of siblings and a shared dream of building something meaningful, the cabins were crafted using cypress wood sourced directly from the family farm. Thus, a lodging experience was born—one that not only respects its surrounding environment, but honors it.

Today, Rancho Amalia is far more than a place to rest: it is a sanctuary for nature connection, wellness, and authenticity. The 34-hectare property blends agriculture, reforestation, and conservation. It houses the private forest reserve “Los Higuerones,” a refuge for rich wildlife: from hummingbirds, toucans, and sloths, to occasional sightings of quetzals and ocelots—all made possible by its proximity to the Chayote Reserve and a steadfast commitment to conservation.

The surrounding landscapes are enchanting and ever-changing throughout the year: lush, vibrant greens during the green season, and warm, golden tones in the dry season, capped off by sunsets that paint the sky in breathtaking colors. From various viewpoints across the property, you can admire the Gulf of Nicoya, the Central Valley skyline, and rolling mountain ranges layered across three visual planes.

Today’s restaurant is lovingly run by family members who take pride in serving local cuisine made with fresh, quality ingredients. Visitors are treated to coffee from award-winning local producers.

Over at the lodge, guests are welcomed with a sample of high-altitude coffee grown right on the farm—a living legacy of grandfather Guillermo, who believed in planting coffee on these grounds when no one else saw its potential. That same visionary spirit lives on in everything we do here.

Rancho Amalia remains a family project, hosted with warmth, heart, and deep respect for nature. Every team member—from those who care for the horses to those who cook your meals or welcome you at the cabins—is part of an experience thoughtfully designed to help you reconnect with what truly matters.
